3 paragraph thingy .. lol

1. NIGHTJOHN
This story is about slaves who are looking for things bigger than what they have. Slaves were very popular in this time. Sarny was the little slave girl who couldn't identify a penny. Not very many people were wealthy in this time. Mammy was the one who would always pray. Sometimes she would pray about freedom to be head in the kettle. She doesn't like talking about her feelings out loud because she doesn't want anyone to hear her. NightJohn was the one who taught Sarny letters. He would teach people letters in exchange for tobacco. He taught her the first letter... letter A. Then later Alice comes into the story. Alice was also a slave who got beaten and whipped. And she also got attacked by dogs. So she has marks on her back and pretty beat up. After all that mammy tells NightJohn she doesn't want him teaching Sarny letters anymore. Mammy thinks its a bad idea. NightJohn thinks its a good idea to teach slaves to read and write so they can be educated a little and so they will be able to tell their stories. Sarny and NightJohn continues with the letters.

2."MASCOT"
This story is about Malcom x is a teenager who tried to become a boxer. He lost to this guy named bill Peterson, he was white and Malcolm lost to him twice. Later on he got sent to reform school. He wrote Ella to come visit Boston and stay. Ella his half sister comes to visit Boston. Ella also arranged full custody of Malcolm. The person who had a big impact in his life was his English teacher Mr. Ostrowski. This teacher discouraged him to become a lawyer because and that he should do carpentry. This made him look at things differently. Towards the end of the story Malcolm moves in with Ella in Boston.

3. Compare&Contrast great debaters& 2 other stories
Compare- All 3 stories have a goal they are trying to reach like in NightJohn hes learning how to read and write. In Mascot hes trying to reach Boston. And in the Great Debaters they are trying to compete with Harvard in debates. Also they all have racism going on. Like they all deal with like freedom,blacks or rights. Blacks are all treated poorly by whites.



Contrast- the Great Debaters and NightJohn, NightJohn the slaves got whipped and beaten. In Great Debaters they got lynched.  In the Great debaters and mascot. Mascot he was trying to reach Boston and in Great Debaters they tryed reaching Harvard.
